"People of God" - the winner of Grand Prix and the Jury Prize of Economics this year's International Film Festival in Cannes - is based on the true story of monks who lived in a monastery in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains in Algeria Tibhirine. Over the years they lived in total harmony with the Muslim population, serving its and helping without a trace conversion. When Algeria came to conflict with Islamic extremists and the escalation of violence, local authorities began to insist that the Cistercians left Tibhirine. On the night of 26 to 27 March 1996 a group of armed men stormed into the monastery and kidnapped seven monks. Two months later, their bodies were found. The circumstances of their deaths have not been clarified until today.
